County Commissioners on Tuesday accepted a draft copy of an agreement to place high-speed fiber optics equipment in a jail pod after the current jail is vacated.
The agreement would be in effect until March 1, 2043, when it could be extended.
Following a five-minute executive session for contract negotiations with County Counselor Justin Meeks and Fort Scott Economic Development Director Rachel Pruitt, commissioners heard a report on work being done to bring cost-effective high-speed fiber optic internet to Fort Scott.
Casey Russell, formerly with Fort Scott Community College information technology and presently with KanREN Inc., explained how a group was formed in 2010 to determine how to bring improved and cost-effective internet access to the Fort Scott community, the city of Fort Scott, the school systems and Bourbon County’s courthouse and jail.
