Plans to build a new inclusive playground at Jackson Park in Atchison have stalled as the city has received word from the state that its grant application requesting $55,000 for the project failed.
“Your Jackson Park Playground project was not one recommended for funding this year,” the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism wrote to the city of Atchison dated Sept. 25. Final word on the city’s application comes about six months after it was submitted in March.
That news now has city staff evaluating how to move the project forward. In a memo to Interim City Manager Becky Berger dated Oct. 6, Director of Public Works and Utilities Justin Pregont notes that city “staff will continue to evaluate every opportunity to move this important project forward.”
