Pretty Prairie voters say no to increased taxes in special election

Voters in Pretty Prairie soundly defeated a ballot question that would have authorized higher property taxes this fall to support the 2018 city budget.

The unofficial tally Friday in the mail ballot election was: Yes 52; No 105. Canvassing of election returns will take place at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Pretty Prairie City Council prepared a back-up budget in case the tax lid question failed. “We just drop back now and go with the one that is under the tax lid requirements,” said City Clerk Patti Brace.

The bigger version would have generated money for street improvements and to boost cash reserves. “They’ve been kind of scaling back in the last two or three years,” she said of funding for street work. The city golf course has proved a costly operation, affecting city expenditures. None of the tax hike requested would have gone to the golf course, Brace said.
