Groundwater from the area near the former American Cleaners in Haysville has been contaminated by volatile organic chemicals, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The contamination affects domestic water wells from Grand Street south to 85th and from Vanarsdale east to Santa Fe, the department said. It doesn’t affect the city of Haysville’s drinking water.
American Cleaners, 106 Stewart Avenue, has been closed since the ’90s.
The state has been investigating the contamination since 2011, according to information given to residents during a community meeting on Aug. 17. A Powerpoint presentation that was shown during the meeting is now available online on the department’s news page.
The department hopes to connect the affected homes to the city’s water mains. It’s a process that could take months.
