Abilene celebrates western heritage

A town that prides itself as the boyhood home of President Dwight Eisenhower also has a history of being a rough cowtown with its whiskey drinking, gunfights and historic cattle drives.Over Labor Day weekend Abilene will celebrate its western lore with the sesquicentennial of the Chisholm Trail.There is still a lot of controversy surrounding the trail 150 years after the first longhorns were loaded onto a rail car on Sept. 5, 1867 and shipped east. Should it be called the Chisholm Trail, blazed by trader Jesse Chisholm, or should it be the Texas Cattle Trail, McCoy’s Trail or the Abilene Trail?
