A technicality disqualified the city of Pretty Prairie from successfully competing for a $500,000 federal grant to install a reverse osmosis system.
Pretty Prairie City Clerk Patti Brace knew by the outside of the envelope from the Kansas Department of Commerce the contents couldn’t be good news, she said.
It arrived in the mail Jan. 14, she said. “They didn’t even bother to lick the envelope,” she said.
The hoped-for Community Development Block Grant is federal aid that flows through the state. Federal guidelines are attached to the application process and require two public hearings be held before Sept. 15. Pretty Prairie had a public hearing Sept. 6 and a second hearing Sept. 20, unaware of the deadline.
“I was blindsided by that one,” she said. She took a photo of the letter and texted it to each city council member. “They were flabbergasted as well,” she said.
