The city likely will allow weapons to be carried into the Parsons Municipal Building in 2018, but the public will have a chance to weigh in on the issue.
City Attorney Ross Albertini gave an update during a Thursday afternoon city commission work session on what the city would have to do to comply with legislation allowing people to carry concealed guns into public buildings. The city received an exemption from the legislation that was approved a few years ago. Some cities’ exemptions will run out in July if they don’t take further action, but Albertini said because of the timing of Parsons’ exemption, according to the League of Kansas Municipalities, the city’s exemption can remain in place until the end of the year.
