Phillipsburg rallies after family loses house in fire

It didn’t take long for this community to rally after a family lost its home in a fire Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported at approximately 12:40 p.m. Friday at the home of Jacque Bretton on the west end of town. No one was at home when the fire broke out, but the house was a total loss, and the family’s two dogs died in the fire.

Friends and community members began messaging on Facebook how to help, and within a few hours, a private group had formed to centralize the efforts, said Amy Jo Stephen.

“That’s the great thing about living here,” Stephen said. “When someone is sick with cancer or has a disaster like this, everybody pretty well rallies right around and we get busy getting things going to help them out.”

“It’s just typical Phillipsburg,” said Sheila Roberts, a patron at the store Saturday.

She said she’s known Bretton since she was a baby and immediately posted in the Facebook group an offer to help.

The quick response to help was no surprise to many in Phillipsburg.
