Butler County is learning from Sedgwick County’s mistakes. Finance officials in Butler County said they’re reviewing their own payment processes after Sedgwick County discovered late last year it lost nearly half a million dollars in a fraudulent scheme. But officials in Butler County said their more old-fashioned system may be helping protect them against fraud.
Sedgwick County discovered the missing money in October 2016. Basically, it sent nearly half a million dollars to what it thought was a legitimate vendor but instead it was a scam. While it was a financial hit to Sedgwick County, if something like that happened to a smaller county, like Butler, it could be crippling.
