Newton sign ordinance drafted

According to Director of Communication for the City of Newton Erin McDaniel, the city has drafted an update to a proposed ordinance designed to better regulate the use of signs throughout the city.

That redrafted ordinance will get its first public hearing in the next few weeks.

According to McDaniel the Newton/North Newton Planning Commission has already worked on updates to Article IX of the Zoning Code for months. That article is what regulates signage.

“The ordinance governs the number, size, type, location and physical aspects of signs for reasons of traffic safety, effective communication, aesthetic and environmental values of the community,” McDaniel said, “to reduce excessive and confusing sign displays and to protect free speech.”
