City raises stink over proposed asphalt plant

Ottawa city officials are not eager to see the county pave the way for an asphalt plant to be built on the eastern outskirts of the community.
Ottawa Mayor Sara Caylor is set to condemn Bettis Asphalt Construction’s proposal in the second draft of a letter to be sent to the Franklin County Planning Commission.
The Topeka­-based asphalt and construction company submitted its vision for a plant at the southwest corner of East 15th Street and I­35 to the county planning commission, which has yet to take up the matter. Though the proposed site is outside Ottawa’s city limits, it would be on the community’s doorstep, prompting some elected city officials to express concern.
