Carbondale rebuilds police department

The Carbondale City Council hired a full-time police officer and two part-time officers during it’s April 4 meeting.

Lee Curtis, council member, made the motion to hire Shannon Seal as a full time officer. Seal began administrative duties April 5 for Gordon Smith, who began duties at Carbondale police chief April 4.

Smith informed the council that on his first day he began evaluating and organizing the police department. He said there are too many unnecessary guns in the city’s possession, and has been in contact with the state’s gun repository officials for assistance and guidance. He said there are several excess uniforms that probably be beneficial to the incoming officers. He said he would have to purchase his uniform in Kansas City as that’s the closest location he is aware of that supplies uniforms.
