Sedgwick County Commissioners heard about the compensation and retention of county employees Wednesday morning.
Human resources director Eileen McNichol told commissioners the county is lagging behind private businesses and counties of similar size when it comes to pay and benefits. She says this has affected the county’s ability to recruit and retain new employees.
She said a large portion of people are not progressing through pay range as fast as they should. One reason she cited was the county’s lower starting pay than the market offers.
A recent survey shows on average, Sedgwick County pay is 7.4% below on the minimum end scale positions and 1.5% below on maximum scale positions.
