Derby City Council members voted unanimously last week to file a formal appeal over a formula that, on vehicle purchases in Wichita, directed most of Derby’s voter-approved sales tax to Sedgwick County.
Derby followed through with Council’s wishes Friday as it filed a formal appeal against the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) in Shawnee County District Court.
“Our next step is just to wait for KDOR to file its response,” Derby City Manager Kathy Sexton said in an email.
Derby officials looked into the split in sales taxes after Derby resident Jane Polk noticed the split on her receipt of a vehicle she purchased in Wichita. She said two-thirds of the Derby half-percent tax that was most recently approved by voters in 2013 was going to Sedgwick County instead of the City of Derby.
