There will likely be no rooms available at the inn this weekend in Pittsburg — or quite possibly anywhere within a 40-to-60 mile radius.
The reason “no vacancy” signs will likely be the norm at local motels and hotels this weekend is connected to Pittsburg State University, as it plays host to the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor National Track and Field Championships March 11-12. Hundreds of athletes along with coaches, staff and fans are expected.
LaWana Johnson, general manager of Pittsburg’s Holiday Inn Express, said her property has been nearly 100 percent booked for weeks.
“We’re having to turn people away and are referring them to Fort Scott,” Johnson said Wednesday. Having those rooms filled is a blessing during what is normally a slow time of year in the hospitality industry in the region, she said.
