Ottawa media specialist taps creativity

It might be easy to overlook Mat Simonson.

He’s the man behind the video camera during Ottawa city commission meetings.

He designs the slides on Ottawa’s government access TV channel.

And many photos on the city’s website are shot through his lens.

Simonson, a self-described “behind-the-scenes guy,” said there’s no typical day for him as a multimedia specialist for the City of Ottawa.

“I like being able to be creative in a day-to-day work environment,” he said.

Simonson, 35, graduated from the University of Kansas in 2003 with a degree in film and worked in Topeka and Lawrence for a couple of years after that. Then the Ottawa position caught his attention.

“I liked the idea that it was a small town and multiple responsibilities, more graphic design,” he said. “Every day brings something different.”

In addition to his video, photography and graphic design responsibilities, Simonson organizes a community calendar “What’s Up Ottawa,” plots educational segments with the city’s puppets, Carlos and Franklin, and assists on social media.
