Two men were killed when a trench collapsed Tuesday afternoon in downtown Hays.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 1:36 p.m. to a trench collapse near Eighth and Main, in front of the Ellis County Administrative Center, where sewer line repairs were taking place.
One of three workers was able to be rescued and was taken to Hays Medical Center for treatment. Two others were trapped after the collapse and died.
The men were working on a sewer line under Main Street, replacing the line, according to Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty. They were digging a trench to do the repair work — approximately 11 feet deep — when a portion of the trench collapsed.
