Shawnee County commissioners Thursday approved a scholarship program for children to participate in parks and recreation summer programs for free or at a reduced cost.
The program aims to make activities like baseball and swimming lessons more accessible to low-income children. The scholarships follow the federal reduced lunch program guidelines, John Knight, parks and recreation director, said. To qualify for the scholarship, a family of four would need to make less than $31,005 a year for a 100 percent scholarship or $44,123 for a 50 percent scholarship.
