Ottawa talks ‘a bit of a jump’ for commissioners’ pay

Those willing to serve deserve a little more, Ottawa officials said Monday.

City commissioners continued to discuss raising the stipend paid to those on the commission, but took no action at their study session Monday afternoon at Ottawa City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St.

The raise from the annual $1,200 would be to ensure that future commissioners will not be limited by a stipend disproportionately low compared to the position’s time and energy commitments, commissioners have said.

The conversation is timely, Commissioner Sara Caylor said.

“I do think there needs to be movement on it,” she said. “If we really want to have representation around this table of everybody in our community, we need to be cognizant that we are not setting the threshold where a person cannot be a commissioner. If we really say that we represent everyone, let’s do the right thing.”
