Community outreach part of job for law enforcement

When nothing happens on an officer’s shift, local law enforcement agencies consider that a productive and good day.

While some see law enforcement officers as those individuals who only make arrests and hand out citations, many do much more to reach out to the community.

“We are not the bad guys,” said Finney County Sheriff Sgt. Steve Martinez, who is in charge of that agency’s community outreach program.

Whether it’s a K-9 police dog demonstration or career day at the schools, both the Garden City Police Department and the Finney County Sheriff’s Office are working hard to connect with the community.
