It affects every fire department in the country and in turn, your insurance rates. It’s each fire department’s Insurance Service Office rating, or ISO rating for short. This year, the South Hutchinson fire department made big strides when it comes to improving its rating.
“It’s really one of the only methods that you can grade your fire departments on,” explained South Hutchinson fire chief Mike Patterson. “How well they’re prepared, how well they maintain their equipment and train their people.”
South Hutchinson’s last fire protection rating was given back in 1997 and on a scale of one to ten, one being the best, it got a seven.
But after years of work toward improving that number, the department jumped up to a three rating.
