Hutch council considers exemptions to rental registration

Hutchinson City Council directed city staff Tuesday to prepare an ordinance that could mostly exempt 10 percent of rental units from the city’s rental registration and inspection program which is going into effect this year.

Investment Resources Corporation of Wichita requested new rentals be exempted for six years after construction and that rentals governed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development only be inspected — and required to pay the registration fee — every six years.

Matt Catanese, company vice president, said new buildings have to be inspected before they get an occupancy permit, and the federally insured mortgages through HUD require rigorous inspections of their own.
