Homeowners in Shawnee with a pool, or hoping to install a pool, may soon have new safety rules to abide by.
Current city code, which staff members found to be noncompliant with the International Building Code, allows residents to have pools if a 4-foot tall fence surrounds them. International Building Code guidelines, established in 2012, recommends that all pools, regardless if they have a pool cover, should also have fences taller than 4 feet surrounding them.
The Shawnee City Council was made aware of the discrepancy between city code and the International Building code and wants to update the city’s rules.
