Mission lifeguards to get pay raise they appealed to city council for last September

A group of Mission lifeguards who made a plea for higher wages before the city council last September will get a pay raise.

The 10 lifeguards came to the city council last fall to say the they were paid less than lifeguards in nearby cities. Last week, the Mission city staff presented an updated pay plan for part-time employees that includes a raise for the lifeguards.

Lifeguard starting hourly pay will be raised from $7.50 in Mission to $8.75. That brings it in line with the starting pay in Fairway, Prairie Village, Olathe and Shawnee, according to a city survey. Lifeguards for the Johnson County Parks and Recreation system make $9.50 per hour.
