Proponents of sheriff recall have 90 days to fill petitions

Once the first signature has been collected on a recall petition for the Thomas County sheriff, the countdown begins, the county election official said.

From that day, the recall committee and others circulating the petition have 90 days to collect 1,360 valid signatures, which represents 40 percent of those who voted for Sheriff Rodney Taylor and his challenger, David Rodriguez, in the 2012 election, County Clerk Shelly Harms said.

Harms said those collecting signatures would likely need to collect more than the minimum number required because some signatures will undoubtedly be found invalid. She said that for a signature to be valid, the signer must be a registered voter who hasn’t changed his or her name or address without notifying the county.
