Wichita City Council members agreed Tuesday to stick with the city’s tougher requirements when dealing with domestic battery offenders rather than go along with current state law.
The decision came as the council considered amendments to the city’s criminal code to bring it in line with state statutes.
All the changes were fine with council membersexcept when it came to agreeing with state law that requires judges consider only domestic battery convictions over the previous five years when sentencing a domestic battery offender for a second offense. That’s significant because a second offense requires mandatory jail time.
