The Kansas Department of Commerce just announced that 13 cities and 3 counties will share more than $7.7 million in CDBG funds. According to the press release:
Sixteen Kansas communities will share a total of $4,350,044 in federal grants through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the Kansas Department of Commerce announced today.
“From downtown revitalization efforts to purchasing needed equipment to improving streets, Community Development Block Grant funds can help strengthen communities,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “Our rural communities and counties are critical to our efforts to jumpstart the Kansas economy.”
The CDBG program provides federal funds to local governments for the development of viable communities by addressing their housing, public facilities and economic development needs. To be awarded funds, communities must meet at least one of three program objectives: benefit to low and moderate-income individuals; prevent or eliminate slums and blight; or resolve an urgent need where local resources are not available to do so.
CDBG funds are one of the Department’s primary tools in supporting the state’s small, predominately rural communities. The Department has distributed more than $257 million in CDBG funding in the last decade.
“We recognize the challenges these communities face, but we also recognize the positive impact these areas have on the state,” George said.

Anthony $161,250
This project involves the purchase of a 3,000 gallon tanker fire truck. The city is matching this grant with $53,750.Blue Rapids $140,000
This project involves the replacing or rebuilding of the storm sewer in the city. The city will match with $123,660 for this project.Burlingame $400,000
The city will install a new substation at its power plant. The city will use $641,000 in bonds to match.Cherokee County $206,437
The county will buy two fully equipped ambulances for Cherokee County Ambulance Association Inc. The county is providing $206,437 in matching funds.Cherryvale $100,000
The street paving project is in a targeted area on 4th Street. The city is providing $100,893 in matching funds.Courtland $223,629
The project will reconstruct the parkway on three blocks of Main Street. The city, through bonds, will match the grant with $223,629.Hillsboro $400,000
The project consists of removing and replacing street pavement. The city is providing matching funds of $434,407.Independence $400,000
This project will address approximately 160 curb ramps located throughout the city in an effort to meet ADA requirements. The city is matching this grant with $400,000.LeRoy $380,979
This project will construct a 5,300-square-foot community center that will include a storm shelter. The city will match the grant with $235,000.Oakley $139,842
The city will acquire a new Class A pumper truck. The city will provide $110,000 in matching funds.Oberlin $394,979
The project will reconstruct 10 blocks of streets in four areas of town. The city will provide matching funds of $131,660.Osborne County $69,475
This project is will replace an unreliable ambulance with a new one. The county is matching this grant with $69,475.Overbrook $400,000
The city will expand the existing library and make it ADA compliant. The Norton Trust will provide $516,508 in matching funds.Phillips County $209,250
The proposed project involves buying a commercial pumper truck for the Phillips County RFD No. 3A. The fire district is providing matching funds of $69,750.Wathena $400,000
The project will upgrade the city’s electrical system. Bonds and local funds will provide $642,876 in matching funds.Wellington $324,203
The project will bring Memorial Hall and Auditorium up to ADA requirements. The city is providing matching funds of $324,204.
