City Of Hays Discusses Gas Price Gouging

The City of Hays has received numerous complaints from travelers over the years about price gouging at a particular gas station (Quest Fuel on north Vine Street). Commissioners talked about the possibility of passing an ordinance requiring all gas stations to post their prices, or even purchasing a billboard that would warn visitors not to visit that station. They certainly have a challenge before them trying to protect the image of Hays, especially with social media and on-line reviews playing such a big role in tourism. Too many negative reviews could result in people passing by Hays and continuing to the next stop.

“I do think we have a responsibility when the name of Hays is being besmirched by unethical practices to at least explore whether there are alternatives,” [Commissioner Kent]Steward said. “But sometimes the solution is worse than the problem.”
