The Kansas Star Casino means new revenues for Mulvane. Pursuant to state law, the city receives 1% of the casino’s profits. Now, the community is brainstorming on how to best utilize the new source of funds:
Everyone seems to have a wish list of what they think the money should be used for, but ask around inside city hall, and you’ll learn the city has a wish list as well.
“Every city in America needs to replace water lines, sewer lines, streets, put a new roof on city hall…”
City Administrator Kent Hixson says compared to the city’s $18 million budget, a half million dollars isn’t an excessive amount of money. But he says he’s certainly not complaining.
Something else the city council will have to consider are the benefits it told people they might receive if the casino were to build near Mulvane – things like lower property taxes or lower electrical rates.
Hixson said some of the those benefits were based on the first casino offer they saw – for a much larger casino.
…
Hixson says he hopes the people of Mulvane will understand the money won’t be able to fund everything they want.
